British Cheese Board Secretary to Address Pembrokeshire NFU Cymru meeting

Nigel White, Secretary of the British Cheese Board, will be the guest speaker at the next Pembrokeshire NFU Cymru county meeting on Thursday, 25 March 2010.

 

The meeting will be held at Agriculture House, Haverfordwest, at 8pm and all NFU Cymru members are invited to attend. Nigel White will brief NFU Cymru members about the work of the British Cheese Board and the future outlook for cheese markets in the UK.

National recognition for Gwynedd youth workers

Two of Gwynedd Council's Youth Service workers have been shortlisted for a national award recognising their dedication and service.

Gwynedd Council's Elwyn Jones and Janice Roberts will attend the prestigious Youth Work in Wales Excellence Awards 2010 held in Cardiff. The Wales-wide awards recognises the hard work, innovation and dedication shown by youth workers and projects that are making a real difference in communities across Wales.

Two Flintshire beaches have been given important cleanliness awards.

Talacre and Gronant beaches have been awarded both the Green Coast Award and the Seaside Award (Yellow Flag) by "Keep Wales Tidy" for the season ahead.

The beaches fulfil 13 criteria which fall into five groups - cleanliness, information, management, safety and water quality. To achieve Green Coast Award status the beach must satisfy the EC Guideline water quality standard which is 20 times more stringent than the Mandatory Standard required for Seaside Award status.

Supplementary budget will help Government deliver One Wales commitments

Jane Hutt, Minister for Business and Budget, has presented the Government's supplementary budget to the Assembly. The budget allocations include an extra £87m for the NHS, £26.4m for education and skills and £63m for capital projects.

The Minister said: "Supplementary budgets align budgets with available resources and reflect in-year changes to plans designed to maximise delivery of our strategic priorities.

"This supplementary budget will enable the Assembly Government to continue delivering the One Wales agenda. The additional funds being released will support projects being taken forward under the Strategic Capital Investment Framework. These projects will help to improve our transport infrastructure, provide affordable housing and tackle climate change.

Two Welsh companies are about to embark on a mission to the United States, to help bring new business opportunities back home.

Cardiff Bay-based interactive media provider, Cube Interactive, and neighbouring website solutions company, SubHub, who both operate out of Mount Stuart Square, will join 37 of the UK's leading creative businesses on the second annual Digital Mission to the South by Southwest Interactive Festival (SXSWi) in Austin, Texas.

They are hoping the increasingly popular festival will help them make the most of opportunities in global markets and attract international business partnerships that will boost the Welsh economy.

Pope's visit- First Minister expresses disappointment

The First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones has expressed his disappointment that Wales will not be on Pope Benedict XVI's itinerary during his official visit to the UK later this year.

The dates of the Papal visit to Scotland and England during September 16-19 were confirmed on Tuesday 16th March.

First Minister Carwyn Jones said: "I know that people throughout Wales will share my regret that our nation will not be able to share directly in this historic event - only the second visit by a pontiff to the UK in nearly five centuries.

From 28 March 2010 you can travel on Sherpa buses for just £1 per journey.

The Sherpa bus service takes you all over northern Snowdonia connecting with walks, holiday pursuits, beauty spots and a whole range of mountain destinations.

You can forget the car, and use public transport to access Snowdonia's stunning mountain walks and other local attractions. Each journey on the S1, S2 and S6 routes will cost only £1 as part of the Snowdonia Green Key initiative.

The Snowdonia Green Key initiative is a partnership between Gwynedd Council, Conwy County Borough Council, the Countryside Council for Wales, Snowdonia National Park Authority, Visit Wales and the Department of Enterprise Innovation and Networks, that focus on a sustainable transport networks in Snowdonia National Park.

NFU staff step up to the challenge for Sense charity

Three intrepid walkers from south Wales will be taking on the challenge of a lifetime to conquer The Ridge Walk.

 

Malcolm Thomas, John Mercer and Sian Davies from Carmarthenshire will join one of two NFU staff teams who are hiking 52 miles along Ridge Way and climbing a total of 3,800ft, all in aid of deafblind charity Sense.

 

The teams will set off from Oxfordshire to follow the oldest road in the UK to Wiltshire, and with only 24 hours to tackle this walk it is not for the faint hearted.

 

Former NFU Cymru Director, Malcolm Thomas said, "It will be a real challenge to complete the walk in 24 hours but we have been training hard and I am looking forward to the challenge.

Robert helps open Usk nature trail

Students from Coleg Gwent's Usk Campus joined Welsh Assembly Minister for the Environment, Jane Davidson, when she opened an Usk nature trail recently.

 

An ex-Independent Living Skills student, 18-year-old Robert Wall from Abersychan, had more than one good reason to be part of the prestigious opening of the Bullfinch Walk in Usk last week.

Tree planters frozen out of forest

Forestry Commission Wales's tree planters are racing against the clock to complete their planting programme which has been delayed by the coldest winter for over thirty years.

The bad weather has meant that many forests have been inaccessible since mid December. Even when staff have been able to access the planting areas, the ground has been frozen and unsuitable to plant trees.

Now it's all hands on deck as Forestry Commission Wales staff, planting contractors and apprentices attempt to plant three million trees.

In total, 1200 hectares are due to be replanted this year - one hectare is approximately the same size as the Millennium Stadium.
