Students from Coleg Gwent's Usk Campus joined Welsh Assembly Minister for the Environment, Jane Davidson, when she opened an Usk nature trail recently.

An ex-Independent Living Skills student, 18-year-old Robert Wall from Abersychan, had more than one good reason to be part of the prestigious opening of the Bullfinch Walk in Usk last week.

Not only did he help lay part of the footpath under the guidance of tutor Chris Carey, but he and his peers also helped the local community enjoy nature and encourage walking in a neglected part of Usk.

As part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, students carried out volunteer work around Usk with the Usk Conservation Community Group. Now an Introductory Diploma Land and Environment student, Robert helped lay and level the path surface and carried out litterpicking at the site. He said "It was really exciting. It is good for the wildlife and people who use it will enjoy the walk."

The Minister for the Environment suggested it was helpful that all the strands of community groups and volunteer organisations can come together to help the community thrive.
