The First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones has expressed his disappointment that Wales will not be on Pope Benedict XVI's itinerary during his official visit to the UK later this year.

The dates of the Papal visit to Scotland and England during September 16-19 were confirmed on Tuesday 16th March.

First Minister Carwyn Jones said: "I know that people throughout Wales will share my regret that our nation will not be able to share directly in this historic event - only the second visit by a pontiff to the UK in nearly five centuries.

"I was keen for Wales to be part of this event - not only for Wales' Catholic community but for the whole of our nation.

"However I wish Pope Benedict a very happy and successful visit and hope to welcome him to Wales on another occasion."

Notes

The First Minister extended an invitation on 3 March to the Pope to visit Wales in a letter to the Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain - Archbishop Faustino Sainz Muñoz.
